You hired smart, hardworking people who believe in your mission.
So why does it always feel like chaos?
Every leader, at every level, wants the same thing: a team that executes without constant oversight, takes ownership without being told, and moves fast without burning out.
Instead, most leaders find themselves trapped in a permanent state of urgency, which only gets worse as you scale and add more people:
Endless Meetings with little output
Smart people talking past each other
Conflict that feels personal instead of productive
This catches leaders by surprise, where you’re endlessly reacting to fires instead of working on what really matters.
Most teams assume the problem is bandwidth, communication, or resources. But after a decade inside hypergrowth companies, including a unicorn, Marcos Torres now believes those are symptoms, not the cause.
Left unaddressed, this dynamic creates an infinite loop of chaos that leads to burnout, disengagement, and cultures that quietly break long before leaders notice.
And by that time, it’s too late.
So, how can we as leaders create a sustainable culture of high-performers? And not only without sacrificing speed… but while increasing speed?
Hi, I’m Marcos.
Early in my career at a fast-growing tech startup, I was convinced I was crushing it. I hit every goal, stayed in my lane, and kept my head down. So when the promotions never came, I was confused.
The problem couldn't be me, right? It had to be them.
Looking back, I see exactly what was happening: I was so focused on being right that I never asked if I was being effective.
Years later, when I stepped into leadership roles, I began to see the same pattern everywhere. Executives who dominated every conversation as if their word was gospel. Colleagues who couldn't see their own shortcomings, so they undermined their peers instead. In one case, unchecked ego cost us our biggest client, triggered layoffs, and shattered organizational trust.
But I also realized it's not just too much ego that derails teams. Some of the most talented people I worked with refused to speak up, advocate for themselves, or call out problems—until burnout forced them out.
That's when I understood: Organizations can hire for talent, align on mission, and invest in culture—but teams will never reach their full potential until individuals learn how to manage the most volatile force in any room: ego.
Starting with themselves.
